Dino (pronounced dee-no) is a fictional character featured in the Hanna-Barbera animated television series The Flintstones and its spin-offs. He is a pet dinosaur to Fred and Wilma. A purple snorkasaurus, Dino is a metaphorical dog with the characteristics of a pet canine. He frequently leaps upon Fred Flintstone, yapping happily. After knocking him to the ground, Dino energetically licks Fred's face. On other occasions, Dino can be moved to anger, snarling and snapping. Dino was voiced (actually, barked like a dog) by Mel Blanc. Following his death in 1989, the role of Dino was taken over by Frank Welker. In the Flintstones episode, "The Snorkasaurus Hunter," Dino is portrayed as a talkative, wisecracking dinosaur, whose vocal inflections were a copy of comedian Phil Silvers. Thereafter, and for the remainder of the series, Dino's ability to speak vanished without explanation. Dino was also featured in 2 shorts directed by Joseph Barbera – Stay Out! (1995) and The Great Egg-Scape (1997) – which aired on the Cartoon Network’s What-A-Cartoon Show.
