In The Transfer, he appears as the controlling and abusive father of Four, who wants his son to choose Abnegation as his faction. He appears very shocked, when Four actually chooses Dauntless instead of Abnegation as his faction at the Choosing Ceremony.
In Divergent, he, along with Tris, Andrew, Caleb and others, tries to stop the mind-controlled Dauntless to kill members of Abnegation. He later gets on a train with his son, heading towards Amity to find the Abnegation survivors.
In Insurgent, he arrives at Amity sector and also reveals to the Amity leader Johanna that Abnegation leaders died to protect a secret. He appears at Candor with Caleb after Eric's attack. Four attacks him in front of everyone as Dauntless members were teasing him to be a coward due to his confession under the influence of truth serum. He later manages to convince Tris that Jeanine Matthews stole the information her parents and other Abnegation leaders died to protect. He wants to share this information with other factions as well. He along with his group invade Erudite headquarters and knocks down Caleb Prior when he tries to stop them.
